Audio Engineering

HYBRID COURSE

Overview

This course is designed to develop basic theoretical and practical understanding of the fundamentals of audio engineering.

This will be achieved by theoretically and practically exploring in detail the area of audio engineering through lectures, and workshops. In particular, students will actively engage with learning, developing and analyzing the practice of audio engineering through topics such as: psycho-acoustics, decibels, signal flow, gain structure, microphones, crossovers, loudspeakers, amplifiers and digital audio, system design and engineering; provide new insights and techniques; and perform practical exercises that promote pro-active learning, understanding and research.

Course Objectives:

  • Extend technical outcomes in the sonic arts including basic system design and engineering
  • Provide a comprehensive understanding of audio engineering theory and its practice
  • Enhance technical troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Provide a pro-active skill set that can adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of audio engineering, its practice and processes.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to identify, describe and explain audio engineering fundamentals associated with signal flow, gain structure, microphones, loudspeakers, amplifiers, digital signal processing, system design and engineering.

  2. Students will be able explain and apply techniques in a manner that displays practical and real-world understanding.

  3. Students will be able to demonstrate independent and creative engineering approaches to problem solving in the field of audio engineering.

  4. Students will develop research skills and a critical understanding of audio engineering and its associated areas.

Workload

The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.

This course consists of up to 36 hours of direct contact or structured non-contact – 3 hours per week over 12 weeks for the tutorials and hands-on training, where students will play an active role in the practice, refinement, consolidation and extension of their knowledge and understanding.

Teaching Modes

  • Tutorials will deliver a specific topic each week. The topic will consist of engineering theories, concepts and technologies in the field.
  • Tutorials provide an opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the weekly lecture and topic for the course; reinforce concepts, ideas and explore experiences.
  • Participants are required to be prepared to actively engage in discussion on the weekly topic.
  • Hands-on training will sometimes contain presentations from the instructor, the training will largely be an opportunity for students to obtain assistance with their practical development, using the training to raise issues and solve problems.
  • Finally, the hands-on training provide a forum by which students can begin to explore their own ideas and practice.

WHY AES ACADEMY

Passion drives obsession

Change Starts at AES

We envision the Malaysian creative industry to be recognised, celebrated, and cherished. From the old to the young to feel assured that their pursuit for creative prowess will be rewarded. Bridging the gap between their passion and a professional career.

It's going to take us grit

So we’re dedicating ourselves to making sure our style is all about being future-proof and keeps our students hungry to make themselves better and better. With close guidance to make sure they succeed, we’re going to host a community of creative engineers.

It is a journey, we'll get there

We believe practise makes consistency, and consistency evolves us. Having dreams without action makes no sense. And we love what we do. Our excitement for knowledge resonates around the room. And you know what, being able to visualise an outcome, already takes us halfway through the journey. There’s no perfect, but there is definitely progress.
